Irish coffee is a sweet hot drink made with Irish whiskey as a base, along with coffee, sugar, and fresh cream.
It was created in 1942 at an Irish seaplane terminal for passengers. The inventor was Joseph Sheridan (1909-1962), a chef at the airport pub.
The heating systems on propeller-driven seaplanes at the time were not very effective. It is said that this system was devised as a thoughtful gesture to allow passengers to warm themselves while waiting for refueling.
